The Khiching Museum symbolizes Khiching, the historic capital of the Bhanja rulers, situated approximately 205 kilometers from Balasore and 150 kilometers from Baripada. Numerous temples are spread across the area, with some remaining active. Kichakeswari, the most formidable Goddess worshipped by the Mayurbhanj district, is the patron deity of Khiching.
The temple dedicated to her is the only one in India constructed entirely from chlorite slabs. The sculptures found within are truly engaging. A small museum on-site displays sculptures and art pieces that hold historical significance.
Khiching, often mispronounced as Khijjinga or Khijingakotta, served as the ancient capital of the Khijjingamandala kingdom, established by the early Bhanja rulers and positioned in the Panchphir Subdivision of Mayurbhanj district. The area is now recognized as a major heritage site in Odisha, featuring ancient temples dedicated to Kichakeswari, Kutaitundi, and Chandrasekhar, and ruins of the Viratgarh and Kichakagarh forts, a few stupas, and several sculptures.
The archaeological museum located in the Thakurani compound contains numerous images that were discovered during excavations at various sites. Many of these images are life-size and exhibit exceptional artistic quality. The Vishnu Chakra, accompanied by Navagrahas and sculpted deities on both sides, was found among the Khiching ruins and is now displayed in the site museum. This Chakra is complete with an original pedestal designed for mounting on a temple roof. In addition to the Vishnu temple emblem found at Khiching, the sculptures of Vishnu in the museum indicate the strong presence of the Vaishnavite cult in this area.
