The Udayagiri Buddhist Complex is situated on the hilltop with stupendous ancient statues of the Buddha and stone inscriptions and is reached from an unsafe distance of 60 km from Cuttack via Chandikhol and about 32 km from Jajpur town. The archaeological remains of Udayagiri consist of a brick Stupa and 2 brick monasteries.
It is a beautiful stone stepped well with inscriptions on it and rock sculptures at the top of the hill behind the Udayagiri. The Buddhist complex is therefore later than Ratnagiri and Lalitgiri. The monasteries were probably flourishing well between the 7th and 12th centuries AD.
Set in a picturesque site amongst bright hills and greenery, the place forms a mini Golden Triangle that additionally includes Ratnagiri and Lalitagiri and serves as the most favorite destination for rock-cut sculptures, situated only 5 km away from Udayagiri. A good number of fortifications and constructions are being raised by the state government. There are several sculptures in the Nirvana style and those of life-sized objects, which render the area charming enough.
Udayagiri is home to one of the largest Buddhist monasteries in all of Odisha. The whole complex is across the way from Lalitgiri and Ratnagiri, forming the main sites of tourism attraction. The marvelous design and architectural sculptures are beautiful beyond expression. A lovely park indeed enhances its beauty. Udayagiri is yet another beautiful place in Jajpur District, Odisha, with the Buddhist monastery as a natural therapeutic.
