The State Tribal Museum, as the name suggests, is dedicated to showcasing Odisha’s various tribes. The museum is on a large campus that also includes a training center and a hostel. The museum is not new in the sense that the original, much smaller museum opened in 1953, but it was updated and modernized in 2001.

Koraput is a town in Odisha. I participated in a five-day student exchange program where I met other college students from Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and West Bengal. During one of the field trips, we were taken to a tribal village and this one was not the typical tribal village of Jharkhand but a village that belonged to the ‘Bonda Tribe’. We were visiting a branch of the tribe known as the ‘Upper Bonda Tribe,’ which lives in complete isolation from the rest of the country.

We were given specific instructions on how to interact with them, what we should and should not photograph, and, most importantly, not to give them any plastic bottles. Our field trip was even supervised by a government official. I was allowed to take two photographs, and to this day, people are perplexed as to whether that was a village in India or somewhere in Africa. Their clothing, bead jewelry, and eating habits were markedly different from the rest of the region.

Tourists will find that visiting the Museum of Tribal Arts and Artifacts is an excellent decision because there is so much to explore and learn about Odisha’s tribal natives. Walking through the galleries and outdoor exhibition areas, particularly the huts, will be a memorable experience, as will strolling through the herbal garden and sampling tribal delicacies at the in-house food court.
