The important district in Odisha that lies in western Odisha is called the Rice Bowl of Odisha. It was established in the year 1992 from an extent of the Sambalpur district. Most of the people engage themselves in agriculture. Since water supply for cultivation through the Hirakud canal is good, people are engaged with it throughout the year. it is really the business hub of western Odisha. It is said that the Sambalpuri sarees originated from Bargarh district itself.

History has it that a man called Veer Surendra Sai led the famous battle against the British at a place called Debrigarh, which constitutes the peak of the Barapahar mountain range. His fight against the British Raj, mainly after the first War of Independence in 1857, is indeed most remarkable in Indian freedom struggle history.
