Dhenkanal, town, eastern India, in the east-central province of Odisha. Named for Dhenka, a medieval chief of the Savara people, it serves as a market town for rice, oilseeds, and timber, and is a center for handloom weaving. Dhenkanal was once the capital of a princely state, which incorporated itself into Odisha state in 1949, setting the stage for Odisha’s birth in 1950.
