Gandhamardan Hill Station & Parbat, Balangir, Odisha

The Gandhamardan Hills are located in the Odisha district, spanning Balangir and Bargarh. These hills are recognized for their unique medicinal plants that cannot be found in other areas. Gandhamardan Parvat is regarded as the premier hill station in Odisha. The state government has plans to investigate a Bauxite reserve through a partnership with the private sector.

This hill holds historical importance, having once served as a center for Buddhist culture. Many ancient ruins can still be seen on the plateau at the top of the hill. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Hanuman transported this hill from the Himalayas to save Laxman’s life.

Gandhamardan Hill Station

As per legend, during the Tretaya Yug (the Silver Age), Lord Hanuman carried the hill on his shoulders to save Lakshman, who is Lord Rama’s brother. The trek up Gandhamardan Hill enriches the experience, as the entire valley is adorned with bubbling streams and stunning environments. On the hill, visitors can find remnants of Buddhist temples, which are linked to Buddhist heritage.

In the Tretaya Yug, Sushena, the chief physician of Ram’s Vanara Sena, proposed that Hanuman retrieve the herb Bisalyakarani before dawn in order to revive Laxman during the conflict between Lord Ram and Ravan. While carrying a massive portion of the Himalayan region, Hanuman was unable to determine the exact herb he needed.

A fragment of the hill fell to the Earth during his flight towards Lanka, the kingdom ruled by Ravan. Gandhamardan Hills are tied to that fallen section. On the northern slope of the hill, you can find the Nursinghanath Temple, while the renowned Harishankar Temple is situated on the southern slope. Gandhamardan Parvat is a well-recognized hill station in the state of Odisha.
