History of Maa Kalijai Temple
According to legends, a newly married girl (named Jaai) was to be accompanied by her father to meet her husband. Since the in-law’s house is on the island of Chilika Lake, they had to go by boat. Cyclones are very common along the coast of Odisha and owing to the huge cyclone that hit while they were on the boat, this boat capsized in Chilika Lake.
All the boatmen, as well as her father, were rescued except Jaai. After that incident, she was sought after, but they could not locate her. After the accidental death of the girl, people in the countryside started worshipping her as their Goddess and continued to do so ever thereafter, in her virgin aspect as Kali. And thus the name was conferred upon that place.
