Khordha Tourism

Khordha, a small town in the Indian state of Odisha, is home to several top tourist attractions. Bhubaneswar, the state capital, is located just 25 km from Khordha and is part of the Khordha district.

Khordha was carved out as a new district from the former Puri District in 1993. Another new district, Nayagarh, was also created from Puri at the same time. In 2000, the district’s name was officially changed from Khurda to Khordha. The district headquarters is situated in the town of Khordha, previously known as Jajarsingh or Kurada (meaning “foul-mouthed”).

The origins of the name Khordha are uncertain. One theory suggests it is derived from the Odia words “khura” (razor) and “dhara” (edge), implying the local soldiers were as sharp and dreadful as a razor’s edge. However, this etymology remains unconfirmed.

Historically, the Khordha region was densely populated by the Savara tribal community. Over time, the area’s history has become closely tied to that of the broader Puri district. Around the 10th century AD, the Bhoumakars’ rule was supplanted by the Somavamsis.
