Pousha Month Calendar (December-January) 2025
The Hindu calendar has a month called Pousha which falls between December and January.
Dhanu Sankranti signifies the transition of the Sun to Dhanu Rashi or Sagittarius. It demonstrates the start of the Pousha month of the Odia calendar. On this day, devotees take a dip in the holy rivers and worship Sun God. The Sun God is worshipped with special rituals at places of worship. In the Odisha context, the month of Pousha is considered a month of bounty. Therefore, after collecting the harvest, the devotees arrange a celebration. A special Konkani delicacy of sweetened rice flakes called ‘Dhanu Muan’ is prepared and offered to Lord Jagannath and the Sun God.
During the Pousha month at Jagannath Temple, Pahili Bhoga is offered to sibling Deities, starting from Dhanu Sankranti, each day for one month until Makar Sankranti. From Dhanu Sankranti onward, Goddess Mahalakshmi vacates her position in order to leave for her parents’ house for the one month. Thus, food is cooked by Lord Jagannath’s mother (Yoshada) in the Jagannath temple kitchen on a regular morning basis before it is offered to Lord Jagannath. The Prasad is called Pahili Bhoga, it is prepared and offered to the Lord Jagannath each day during this month.
