Ratnagiri Buddhist Monastery & Monuments, Ratnagiri, meaning “hill of ornaments”, is the site of one of the ruined porcelain Mahavira and is situated in the Jajpur district of the state of Odisha. It is located nearly 90 km from Bhubaneswar and 37 km from Chandikhol. In the Ratnagiri Museum are seen many beautiful specimens of stone works, which include ancient Buddha statues.
The diamond triangle consists of two other sites of Buddhist remains that are located on the flat hillock just between the rivers Brahmini and Birupa. The growth of archaea tourism on this site was pioneered in India by the then Sub-Divisional Officer Jajpur, MM Chakravarti, in 1905. The Excavation on the site has revealed the traces of a grand Buddhist establishment, comprising a stupa, monastic complexes, shrines, votive stupas, numerous sculptures, architectural fragments, and museums that can easily match up with Nalanda from Bihar.
As recorded in his travelogue Indika, Hiuen Tsang (the Chinese pilgrim who visited Odisha in 639 AD) notes that Ratnagiri is a flourishing center for Buddhism and Buddhist culture. The place is described as Ratnagiri, located not just in Odisha but in India, as a recognized site for Buddhist archaeological heritage; besides, there are a few basic seals with the legend “Sri Ratnagiri Mahaviharya Samagra Arya Bhikhsu Sanghasya”.
Ratnagiri Monastery focuses on Odisha tourism, representing the natural beauty of Odisha. The Ratnagiri Museum displays sandstone carvings of ancient Buddha statues that would attract you. Ratnagiri is an elevated plateau amid several villages and rural parts of Jajpur district. Numerous festivities and occasions are joyfully celebrated. Within Ratnagiri lies the Mahakala Temple and Stupa. Ratnagiri Buddhist Monastery is a tourist center in the Jajpur District.
