Getting There The Nalbana Bird Sanctuary is located in Khordha district, around 55 km from Bhubaneswar near the southern tip of Chilika Lake. The nearest town is Balugaon, only 14 km away. The sanctuary area is well-connected by road, rail, and air. The drive from Bhubaneswar via NH-5 takes about 2 hours. Daily trains from Bhubaneswar connect to Balugaon railway station. The closest airport is Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar, with taxis and buses available to reach the sanctuary.

The Sanctuary Spread over 15.53 sq km, Nalbana Bird Sanctuary was declared a protected area in 1973 under the Wildlife Protection Act. It harbors over 160 species of resident and migratory birds arriving from as far as Europe and Central Asia. Some rare and endangered birds spotted here include grey pelicans, flamingos, egrets, cormorants, storks, herons, brahminy ducks, pintails, geese, and more.
