Langudi Hills is a low hill situated 8 km from Dharmasala and about 30 km away from Jajpur town. It is the site of an old Indian Buddhist monastery where many ancient Buddha statues can be seen. It was excavated by the Odishan Institute of Maritime and Southeast Asian Studies in the years 1996-2001.
Excavations have shown remains of rock-cut stupas, sculptures, terracotta, figurines, votive stupas, terracotta votive stupas, inscriptions, seal sealings, and various types of potsherds. Based on material finds, Langudi is dated to circa 1 to 11 century AD. Langudi Hills are reputed sites in the Jajpur District of Odisha.
The vestiges of this hill are truly intertwined with Emperor Ashoka’s pious virtue upon which Buddhism was truly aquiver in India. The rock-cut sculptures and inscriptions suggest that it was a powerful Buddhist center during the reign of this emperor. The hill has rock-cut images of Buddha and other Buddhist deities.
Excavations have revealed several artifacts like terracotta seals, pottery, and reliquaries. These findings provide an insight into the religious and cultural practices of that time. Langudi is believed to be one of the earliest Buddhist sites in Odisha, with Ratnagiri, Udayagiri, and Lalitgiri to follow.
It was a center for teaching and meditation for monks and followers of Buddhism. It is connected by road and can be reached by bus or private vehicles. The Hill of Langudi is picking up more interest because of its historical and religious significance and attracting scholars, archaeologists, and tourists.
