Barabati Fort, according to reports, is situated at the heart of the town, about 8 km driving distance away from Cuttack Town. A beautiful thing to see, the Fort was built in the year 1497 AD during the reign of the Ganga dynasty on the banks of the river Mahanadi by Ananga Bhima Deb.
In the present age where only the nine-storied palaces remain as the Testimonies to the Ganga dynasty despite the period from the sway of history, its decaying Fort has enshrouded scarcely engaging quadrangle practices against the East – a 40-foot wide moat built in the area of 12 Baties for invaders Kalapahad in 1268 AD.
Once imprisoned, Sirajuddaula, the famed Muslim ruler, lived for some time in the Fort. By October 1803, the British occupied this Fort and only the ruins remain to be the epitome of the Ganga dynasty. Barabati Fort is a tourist flavor near Cuttack Town. The nine-storeyed palaces, other than that, had eight additional palaces on it. Later this Persian word, Asiana, became misinterpreted and was misreported to have been built by Mukundadev.
Barabati Fort which once bestowed a sense of sensation in the entire Odia militia and became the nightmare of enemies of the Odia race now lies helplessly in ruins. But the moat and the main gate remain to narrate the stories of bravery and heroism of the great Odia race. Barabati Fort is one of the most beautiful tourist places in Cuttack, Odisha.
