Set along the coast of Kendrapara district in Odisha, Gahirmatha Marine Turtle Sanctuary spans across 1,435 sq km of protected tidal beaches and mangrove-lined bay waters. It was specially created in 1997 to preserve the endangered olive ridley sea turtles that annually nest and migrate here in astoundingly huge numbers, making this an exceptional ecotour Odisha site.
The main attraction is witnessing thousands of olive ridges emerging from the waves onto casuarina-lined shores to lay eggs during winter months. Equally mesmerizing is observing baby hatchlings scramble seaward, guided by the moonlit ocean during spring. Since Gahirmatha forms one of the world’s largest rookeries for these marine reptiles, Odisha tourism offers guided turtle-watching tours by motorboat operated by limited tour companies having required permissions.
To visit Gahirmatha, permits are mandatory given the sensitive habitat. Safaris happen during dawn when the odds of sightings are maximum. Mangrove boat trips and nature trails by foot are also conducted showcasing the wetland biodiversity.
October to March are ideal for observing nesting/hatching as the weather stays balmy and dry. Carry binoculars and cameras for that prized close glimpse!
After a day relishing exotic Gahirmatha’s vistas and turtle spectacle, visit Chandipur seaside or Bhitarkanika National Park nearby to round off your Odisha visit places adventure along the scenic coastal belt and make the most of incredible ecotourism treasures it has on offer!
