The Sun Temple in Konark is a grand example of traditional Odisha architecture, also known as Kalinga architecture. It is envisioned as a massive chariot drawn by seven mighty stone horses and mounted on 12 pairs of intricately carved giant stone wheels. The temple is angled to the east so that the first rays of the rising sun illuminate the main entrance. This main entrance is flanked on both sides by two massive stone lions. Both of these lions are depicted trampling an elephant and a man beneath them.
The temple complex encompasses 26 acres of land. It was built with three different types of stones: chlorite, laterite, and khondalite. The original temple had a main sanctuary called Bada Deul or Rekha Deul, which was surrounded by smaller structures. In front of the main sanctuary was a smaller sanctum known as the Bhadra Deul, or people’s assembly hall. The main sanctuary is thought to have stood around 225 feet tall, but little remains of it.
The smaller sanctum, which is a magnificent structure in its own right, has survived the ages. It stands around 100 feet tall and is covered in exquisite stone carvings. This sanctum, like the Khajuraho Temple in Madhya Pradesh, is celebrated for its intricate artwork, themes, and iconography, which includes erotic depictions. Aside from this smaller sanctum, a few other structures and sanctums have been preserved. The Nata Mandir, or dancing hall, the Nine Planets temple, and the kitchen, or Bhoga Mandapa are among them.
