The lively and hardly filled streets of Puri with its bright houses and kinds of regional architecture have their charm. The Jagannath Temple, which rises high over these streets, dominates the skyline. The Chakratirtha (CT) Road to the East, the oceanfront of Marine Drive Road to the West, and the array of hotels, resorts in the middle, and the busy Bada Danda road of hotels and shops selling religious souvenirs and the brightly colored pattachitra paintings are the central areas of activity.
The large expanse of beach, far cleaner at the eastern end, is crowded with sun bathers and swimmers in season, with local fishermen acting as lifeguards. Aside from the pilgrims with hundreds of thousands gathering during the annual Rath Yatra, Puri’s Traveller scene is dominated by Bengalis from Kolkata, and some young Western and Japanese visitors exploring the relaxed charm of the town, mostly on foot.
Bhubaneswar is the capital city of Orissa. It is the largest city in the state and has become the center of economic and religious importance in the area. Bhubaneswar is called the Temple City of Odisha for its large number of magnificent temples and architectural heritage. The contemporary city of Bhubaneswar was laid out in 1946 by the German architect Otto Königsberger.
The city is, like Chandigarh and Jamshedpur, one of India’s first planned cities. Bhubaneswar can be divided historically into two parts, Ancient Bhubaneswar and Modern Bhubaneswar. Ancient Bhubaneswar has historical records dating back more than 3,000 years to the Kalinga empire, while Modern Bhubaneswar was founded in 1948.
The magnificent Sun Temple at Konark is the achievement of Orissan temple architecture and stands as one of the most beautiful monuments of religious architecture in the world. The poet Rabindranath Tagore described Konark by saying ‘here the language of stone surpasses the language of man’, and indeed the experience at Konark cannot be put into words.
This enormous dilapidated structure, now in a state of crumbling disrepair, sits proudly amidst the drifting sands. Today, this site is located approximately two kilometers inland from where the ocean stood but once surf was lapping up against its foundation. Until relatively recently, the temple was located close enough to the shoreline that it served as a navigational marker for European sailors who often referred to it as the ‘Black Pagoda’.
