Similipal Tiger Reserve is part of the Central Indian landscape. Similipal is more than just a Tiger Reserve; it is also a National Park, Wildlife Sanctuary, Biosphere Reserve, and part of the Mayurbhanj Elephant Reserve. Similipal gets its name from the profusion of Semul or Red Silk Cotton trees that blossom brightly in its forests. Similipal’s huge forests are a unique mix of deciduous, semi-evergreen, high-level sal, grassland, and savannahs. It is home to about 1253 species of flowering plants, 99 species of non-flowering plants, 21 species of amphibians, 361 species of birds, 55 species of mammals, 62 species of reptiles, and many other flora and animals that have yet to be recognized.
Similipal Tiger Reserve, located in the north of the state, is noted for its tigers and elephants. It is the country’s sole Tiger Reserve with Melanistic Tigers. Other fauna in Similipal include Bison, Giant Squirrel, Sambar, Chital, Porcupine, Pangolin, Leopard, Pythons, Wild Boar, Barking Deer, Jungle Cat, and Languor, among others. Peafowl, Jungle Fowl, Hill Myna, Parakeets, a variety of Eagles, Hornbills, and Trogons are among the most frequent birds.
